Basil is a dynasty of the vegetation of the Lip flower family. The name “basil” is from Greek origin in which Basileus means king. This can also be seen in the alternative name for basil, namely: kings herb.
Native to India, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, basil is a strongly aromatic annual growing to about twenty to thirty inches in height. It has shiny oval leaves; a square stem; and small white flowers in whorls. There are at least 150 varieties, of this member of the mint family grown around the world for their distinctive flavor and essential oil. Each variety of basil differs in height, color of foliage, and taste. Of the six common varieties of basil, sweet basil is quite popular in Kenya.
Basil seeds take 21 days to germinate and be transplanted in the garden and a further 30 days to begin harvesting.
To harvest Basil, cut the branches above a leaf node to allow the plant to regrow.
